WARPit - PC Cascading - One page guide WARPit is a FREE resource distribution tool used at the University of Edinburgh to ensure that we continue to gain value from purchased resources for as long as possible. You must be registered on WARPit in order to use the site. Registration is easy and quick. Just go to: https://www.warp-it.co.uk/universityofedinburgh and click on the button. NOTE: The process of PC cascading is for Computer Reps ONLY and once claimed, cascaded computers are for University business use only and must remain within the ownership of the University of Edinburgh. How to log a PC/data-containing device onto WARPit Before getting started The person uploading the PC is responsible for going through ALL of the steps listed. If you are unsure if you are a Computer Rep or want to find out where the nearest Computer Rep is contact alan.peddie@ed.ac.uk Before going through the steps you must assess the sensitivity of the data on the device (or of the work that the device was previously used for). More guidance can be found on data sensitivity can be found here. http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/records-management-section/dataprotection/guidance-policies/encrypting-sensitive-data Devices potentially containing highly sensitive data, for instance machines that contain finance, payroll or personnel data are NOT appropriate for cascading. Before uploading a PC onto WARPit, you MUST go through four steps 1) Ensure that the PC is appropriate to cascade. See below for specific details: https://www.wiki.ed.ac.uk/x/F12LDg 2) Ensure that the PC has been correctly formatted. See below for the DBAN method that you must use: https://www.wiki.ed.ac.uk/display/Win7SDP/Decommissioning+a+Windows+7+machine+-+using+Dban 3) Confirm whether the device needs to be PAT tested. If the PC is for single use and not plugged into an extension then it doesn’t need to be PAT tested. If it is for communal use or plugged into an extension then the wires used MUST BE PAT TESTED. 4) Keep a record. Have you made a note of the serial number? Usually this is located on the top of the tower on a sticker. Also, make a note of when you did the DBAN process. Use the additional comments box when uploading the PC to WARPIT. If you have followed all steps listed above, then you are ready to upload the PC to WARPit. How to claim a PC from WARPit It is the responsibility of the person claiming the PC to arrange collection/delivery of the PC. If you are claiming a PC email the person who uploaded the PC directly to discuss the best options for you. If you require assistance from Estates, please get in touch.
