Warp It home page for King's College London

King's Estates and Facilities launched Warp It in 2016.

Warp It is an online platform for reusing materials/goods throughout the university. It is available for university staff to use, and goods that can be reused include:

- Electrical equipment

- Furniture

- Lab materials and more

Warp It saves its users a significant amount of money and reduces the amount of waste we produce as a university, as available items are claimed by other staff instead of buying new equipment.

All items on Warp It are free to claim but a small cost is required to cover the costs of delivery and we've set up a dedicated courier service with CitySprint to make transferring items from campus to campus as easy and efficient as possible.

Follow these 3 easy steps to use the system:

1. You need to have read the terms and conditions outlined here.

2. Email henry.ager@kcl.ac.uk (cc'ing the Sustainability Team) to say that you have read the terms and conditions.

3. You can then register via the below button. Your account will then be approved by Josh or a member of the Sustainability Team.

Carbon and other Greenhouse Gases are given off in the manufacture of products. Every item transferred using WARPit saves on carbon emissions because a new item does not have to be manufactured, transported and purchased. Using standard conversion factors we are able to work out the estimated carbon dioxide equivalent. The conversion factors are calculated by Centre for Sustainability Accounting (CenSA), York, based on previous calculations by Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), University of York

Money saved (£)

Each item transferred on WARPit is given a replacement purchasing value. This is the cost of purchasing a new item. The value is derived from public sector priced catalogues. Each item is also given waste disposal financial value related to it’s weight and volume. The total cost (£) saving is made up from internal trades, external inward trades, waste cost savings. This figure may also include the value (£) of time saved by staff, from avoiding the normal quote, purchase order, invoice process.

Waste (KG) diverted

This is a measure of waste being diverted into reuse rather than disposal. Each item that is transferred using WARPit is given an approximate average weight value (KG) based on a sector leading bulky waste guide. If the KG information for an item is not included in the reference document an average weight of the item is estimated using company specification data.

Equivalent
trees planted

Native broadleaf trees provide sustainable habitat for wildlife and enhance the natural landscape. These are therefore commonly used for Carbon offsetting projects. Over the course of its lifetime a broadleaf tree absorbs on average 730KG. Please note this is trees equivalent, we do not actually plant trees www.carbonfootprint.com
